Four students who have overcome personal challenges were recognized at a meet and greet on January 30 at the Charleston Campus. The event was hosted by CSN President Dr. Bill Kibler and Chief of Staff, Dr. Yvonne Realivasquez, to honor the latest recipients of the Charles and Phyllis Frias Legacy Scholarship. This scholarship, valued at $100,000, is awarded through the Public Education Foundation (PEF).
The scholars include Abeo Robinson (Nursing), Jacquelin Mercedes Bernal (Engineering), Nathan Acosta (Computer Science), and Valeria Villegas-Canales (Business). They shared their stories of perseverance and their future ambitions.
“Every single one of these students has an incredible journey that led them to CSN,” Dr. Kibler stated. “Their commitment to education despite facing adversity is exactly why we are so proud to partner with the PEF and the Frias Trust to support them.”
The event also featured PEF President Kirsten Searer and Dr. Beverly Mathis, Vice President of Academic and Community Initiatives, who mentors the scholars. Representatives from the Frias Family Foundation attended as well, including Trustee John Mowbray.
Since its inception, all 42 recipients of the Frias Scholars Program remain in school, maintaining a 100% success rate. The program reflects Charles and Phyllis Frias’s vision to support Nevada’s future leaders.
