CSN students, faculty, and staff took part in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in downtown Las Vegas on Monday. The group marched along 4th Street as part of an event recognized as the largest MLK parade west of the Mississippi River. Thousands of spectators and hundreds of community organizations attended to honor Dr. King’s legacy and his influence on the civil rights movement.
The holiday was established as a federal observance in 1986 after being signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. Las Vegas has since become known for hosting one of the most significant celebrations in the country.
This year’s parade adopted the theme “Living the Dream: Justice in the Journey. Hope in the Hardship.” The message emphasized unity and progress within the community.
Former Nevada Assemblyman Wendell P. Williams, who started the Las Vegas Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee in 1983, played a key role in organizing this year’s event. His ongoing leadership has helped establish the parade as a major tradition for Southern Nevada.
CSN officials stated that their involvement reflects “the college’s ongoing commitment to diversity, community engagement, and honoring the values of equality and justice championed by Dr. King.”
