DRI has announced a new series of community events in Las Vegas and Reno. These events aim to highlight the role of science in daily life, creativity, and understanding of global challenges. The initiative, called Curiosity Lab by DRI, will feature DRI scientists and guests discussing urgent issues while exploring life in Nevada amid climate change.
“We are excited to launch a statewide science storytelling series,” stated DRI President Kumud Acharya. “Curiosity Lab by DRI will address some of our most challenging environmental concerns, exploring environmental research, personal narratives, and climate solutions. We invite Southern and Northern Nevadans to join us for an unforgettable multimedia and storytelling experience that highlights the innovative research and solutions being implemented to address our pressing climate issues.”
The 2025 event schedule includes sessions in Downtown Las Vegas at the Vegas Theatre Company in the Arts District and at DRI’s Reno campus. Each event begins at 6:30 pm with doors opening at 6 pm.
The series kicks off on February 26 in Reno with “Chasing Snow – Stories of Wonder, Tradition, and the Science of Winter.” Anne Heggli, Ph.D., will share stories linking her family history in snow monitoring with her research.
On March 12 in Las Vegas, “Roots of Wonder: Following Curiosity into the Natural World” features Sean McKenna, Ph.D., who will discuss curiosity’s role across generations.
May 14 brings “Under the Sun: Stories of Heat and Humanity in a Changing World” to Las Vegas. Patrick Hurbain, Ph.D., will talk about extreme heat’s impact on human health.
Reno hosts “From Curiosity to Creation: Listen, Learn, Create” on July 30 as part of Artown. Fil Corbitt will present sound recordings that explore environments through audio experiences.
August 20 sees “Dual Lens: Art and Science in Dialogue” in Las Vegas with Tiffany Pereira from DRI collaborating with filmmaker Jessica Oreck.
“The View from Here: Stories of Perspective and Discovery” occurs on October 22 in Reno featuring Brad Sion, Ph.D., discussing technology’s role in revealing environmental insights.
Finally, November 5 concludes the series with “The Possible Unknown: Stories about Exploring the Unreachable” in Las Vegas. Megan Stueve shares her work documenting hiking trails using 3D technology for digital exploration.
Curiosity Lab by DRI is supported by Nevada Humanities. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for students and educators. The events are suitable for ages 13 and up.
