The Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College will host its final star party of 2024 on December 7, providing an opportunity for the community to learn about double stars, galaxies, and planets. WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe emphasized the importance of these events, stating, “We encourage everyone to take advantage of this exceptional community resource.” He praised Dr. Herring and his team for their efforts in making stargazing accessible.
Observatory Director Dr. Thomas Herring mentioned that if weather conditions permit, attendees might observe celestial bodies such as Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, along with various star clusters and nebulae. “Weather pending, there should be good opportunities to view Saturn, Jupiter, and perhaps Uranus,” he said.
In case of overcast skies, Dr. Herring plans to discuss Jupiter and its moons instead. The star parties are free and run from 6 to 11 p.m., located at 2269 Vanpatten Ave., Carson City campus.
Additionally, a stargazing event is scheduled for December 6 at Silver Saddle Ranch in collaboration with Carson City Park Rangers. This free event will feature telescopes set up around the Red House area with volunteers offering guidance on the solar system and Milky Way Galaxy.
Dr. Herring noted the enthusiasm for these events despite cold weather: “I’m always surprised at how many people will brave the cold for this event.” Attendees are advised to dress warmly and bring questions for Dr. Herring.
