The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is hosting a series of events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. These events are open to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
One event is a book discussion on “Transforming Hispanic-Serving Institutions for Equity and Justice” by Gina Ann Garcia. Dr. Esther Pla-Cazares, known for her advocacy for immigrant students and as the founder of the CSN Generation Dreamers Club, will lead this discussion. The sessions will take place at two locations: North Las Vegas Campus on September 24th from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., and West Charleston Campus on September 26th during the same hours.
Another part of the series includes workshops focused on Chicano history titled “Knowing Our Roots – Forging Our Future.” These workshops will delve into Mexican-American history and contributions of the Chicano community in the U.S. Lunch will be provided at both events which are scheduled for October 1st at West Charleston Campus and October 2nd at North Las Vegas Campus, both from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Additionally, there will be an interactive workshop named “Comunidad y Cultura: Empowering Bilingual Families” on October 15th from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., led by Dra. Margarita Jara, a professor at UNLV and a published author. This session aims to discuss bilingualism’s cognitive benefits and strategies for fostering language development among families while promoting cultural pride.
These events provide an opportunity to engage with Hispanic culture and history throughout Hispanic Heritage Month at CSN.
