In a gathering marked by the vibrant colors of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), attendees celebrated the retirement of Dr. Karin Hilgersom, who served as President for nine years. The event was filled with tributes and reflections on her impactful tenure.
City of Sparks Mayor Ed Lawson initiated the proceedings by reading a joint proclamation with the City of Reno, declaring May 9 as “Karin Hilgersom Day” across northern Nevada. Lawson highlighted TMCC’s growth as a Hispanic-serving institution and praised Hilgersom’s commitment to sustainability and community partnerships.
U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto contributed a video statement, while Regent Joseph Arrascada from the Nevada System of Higher Education delivered a speech commending Hilgersom’s leadership. “You have set the bar high at TMCC, and your legacy will continue to serve students for long after your retirement,” Arrascada remarked.
Arrascada further reflected on his first Board of Regents meeting in January 2021, noting Hilgersom’s dedication to students during pandemic recovery efforts. He recounted witnessing her personal engagement with graduates at an outdoor ceremony, emphasizing her true leadership qualities.
The event featured various speakers including Faculty Senate Chair Jinger Doe, Classified Council President Hallie Madole, and Student Government Association Senator Destanee Cachucha. Yanus Nelson from the TMCC Foundation shared anecdotes about Hilgersom’s energetic presence at events.
A PBS Reno video showcased community leaders and faculty reflecting on Hilgersom’s enthusiasm for improving both TMCC and its surrounding community. The TMCC Leadership Team presented a humorous skit envisioning their future interactions with Hilgersom post-retirement.
Special gifts were presented to honor her contributions, including a custom-made reproduction of the TMCC Mace by Professor Kelly Oswald and plans for a living wall dedication in the EastView Theater building announced by Liberal Arts Dean Natalie Russell.
Hilgersom expressed gratitude during her farewell address: “I am so thankful to everyone who’s here today… there’s so much love that is translated into (TMCC) because of what we do for students.” She humorously advised not to disturb her during her upcoming cruise.
Dr. Jeffrey Alexander, incoming president of TMCC, concluded with appreciation for learning under Hilgersom’s guidance: “It’s been an honor to be in the ‘front row’ and learn from the best.”
The celebration ended with dancing and heartfelt exchanges, underscoring that while Hilgersom embarks on new adventures, her influence will endure within TMCC.
