A recent report presented to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents highlights the impact of the MGM College Opportunity Program, a partnership between NSHE and MGM Resorts International. The program aims to help MGM employees earn degrees, develop new skills, and advance their careers through online education.

Since its launch in 2018, NSHE institutions have awarded 168 degrees and certificates to MGM employees. Graduates noted improvements in leadership, communication, and job-specific abilities. Many participants indicated that without the program’s flexibility and support, pursuing higher education would not have been possible. Each year, between 100 and 150 MGM employees apply for the program across all NSHE colleges and universities.

Nic DuCharme, Senior Manager of Security Strategy at MGM Resorts, is currently enrolled in UNLV’s online MBA program. He shared his experience: “The program finally made something possible that felt out of reach for years. With a full-time role in Global Security and five kids at home, I needed an option that let me keep advancing without stepping away from my responsibilities. The flexibility and support have helped me build the strategic and financial skills I need to lead at a higher level, and I am already applying what I learn in real time. It has given me a renewed sense of momentum at work and for my family’s future,” said DuCharme.

MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle commented on the company’s commitment: “Education creates opportunity, and we continue to support our employees who want to grow in their careers and gain new skills,” Hornbuckle said. “We are grateful for our partnership with NSHE and proud of the many employees who have reached important milestones through this program.”

To meet growing demand from applicants each year, NSHE has expanded its online offerings from 113 programs in 2022 to 155 degree and certificate options now available statewide. Through the College Opportunity Program, MGM covers registration fees, textbooks, proctoring fees, and graduation costs after financial aid is applied—allowing most employees to pursue higher education with minimal or no personal expense.

Board of Regents Chair Byron Brooks addressed the significance of these developments: “The MGM College Opportunity program exemplifies the power of collaboration between industry and higher education in Nevada to create meaningful pathways for working adults,” Brooks said. “By investing in flexible, high-quality degree and certification programs, MGM is empowering its employees to build new skills and advance their careers, while NSHE is proud to provide the academic support that helps strengthen Nevada’s workforce and the hospitality industry.”

Chancellor Matt McNair reaffirmed NSHE’s focus on supporting adult learners statewide: “We are committed to building programs that meet people where they are and help them move forward,” McNair said. “The success of the MGM College Opportunity Program reflects the work of our campuses, the dedication of MGM employees, and the value of public and private partners coming together with a shared goal.”

The evaluation presented also suggests further strengthening efforts by adding more degree options and expanding outreach beyond Nevada.
