More than 15.7 million individuals are employed in restaurants and foodservice outlets across the United States, positioning the industry as the nation’s second-largest private sector employer. The leadership of the Department of Labor (DOL) is therefore of significant importance to the National Restaurant Association, which sees it as vital to the U.S. economy’s success.
The Association has expressed its support for President-elect Donald Trump’s nominations for key DOL positions: Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor and Keith Sonderling as Deputy Secretary of Labor.
Michelle Korsmo, President & CEO of the National Restaurant Association and CEO of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, stated, “The Association encourages Congress to quickly confirm Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Keith Sonderling to lead the Department of Labor.” She emphasized their history of prioritizing policies that are clear and effective, providing clarity for restaurant operators within a complex regulatory environment.
Korsmo highlighted Chavez-DeRemer’s background as a small business owner, noting her understanding of American employers’ obligations under law and how these affect both employees and business prosperity. Chavez-DeRemer has supported restaurant entrepreneurs by voting to protect pathways to ownership and supporting DOL apprenticeship programs aimed at career development in restaurants. Korsmo urged confidence in her confirmation due to her judgment, experience, and leadership.
Regarding Sonderling’s nomination, Korsmo remarked on his expertise in labor policy and regulatory frameworks gained from his roles at the DOL. She noted his advocacy for a clear standard on Joint Employer status aligns with the Association’s stance. His commitment to fair labor practices underscores his suitability for this role.
