The Nevada Department of Education has announced that 12 schools will be receiving the Nevada Purple Star School Award in April. Celebrations for these awards are scheduled for April 16, 21, and 22 in Clark County, and on April 24 in Washoe and Churchill counties.

The award is given to schools that demonstrate a commitment to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families. Dr. Steve Canavero, Interim Superintendent of Public Instruction, stated, “Month of the Military Child is a time to recognize the sacrifices that military-connected children make, and to applaud them for their courage and resilience. Military-connected children play an important role in our schools and communities, and Purple Star Schools are demonstrating a commitment to supporting them.”

The announcement of these awards is part of Month of the Military Child, which has been proclaimed by Governor Joe Lombardo to acknowledge the role of nearly 11,000 military-connected children in Nevada.

The celebrations will include presenting each school with a certificate and banner. The newly recognized schools join 44 others in Nevada that have received this designation since the program’s inception in 2021.

Schools interested in applying for the designation can start the process online.
