Some carriers offer temporary housing and food allowances based on household size. Coverage specifics are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may have sublimits. Policyholders should review their policies or consult their brokers or agents for detailed terms and conditions.
In an emergency, it is crucial for policyholders to know how to contact their insurance companies. Evacuees under mandatory evacuation orders should inquire about policy coverage and available resources while evacuation orders are active. Many homeowners may not realize that their home and renter’s insurance policies could include coverage for evacuation and recovery costs.
The Division encourages evacuees to verify additional living expense (ALE) provisions, limits, and eligibility conditions with their insurers. ALE can cover food and lodging expenditures, furniture rental, relocation and storage costs, and transportation charges. Policyholders should document conversations with insurance representatives, including dates, times, names, and discussion details.
Policyholders are advised to keep copies of their insurance policies accessible by photographing them for storage on a smart device or uploading them to the cloud. Health insurance information documentation is also recommended. Evacuated residents with remaining prescription refills can contact pharmacists for replacements.
