Investigators from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Compliance Enforcement Division (CED) have arrested a man suspected of engaging in title and odometer fraud. The suspect allegedly sold a vehicle on Facebook Marketplace with tampered and forged documents.
The investigation began after an online complaint about potential odometer fraud was received. It was found that the suspect purchased a 2003 Honda Element with over 260,000 miles for $1,200 but did not sign the buyer’s section of the Nevada title. A smog test and vehicle inspection report later showed the car had only 133,292 miles on its odometer, contradicting previous records.
Further inquiry revealed that the suspect engaged in “title jumping,” using the original seller’s name and signature to sell the vehicle three days after purchase. He falsely claimed to be the original owner by signing a fraudulent name on the bill of sale and transferring the Nevada title to a victim.
The suspect sold this vehicle for $4,500 through Facebook Marketplace, advertising it as having over 133k miles.
CED Chief J.D. Decker emphasized caution when purchasing vehicles: “It is imperative that we ask buyers to take the extra step and ensure they are purchasing a legitimate vehicle,” he said. “Get a photo of the seller’s ID and contact information, and meet at a DMV VIN inspection station, eliminating the possibility of odometer tampering.”
The suspect faces charges including unlawful change of mileage, unlawful sale or offer for sale of motor vehicles, forgery, among others. Victims or those who believe they may be involved in similar scams are encouraged to contact CED at 775-684-4790.
