The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced an extension for expired or soon-to-be expired driver’s licenses and ID cards, along with new limited Saturday hours for new residents. This move is part of the DMV’s efforts to serve the public while adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols.

Governor Steve Sisolak will direct an additional 60-day extension for non-commercial driver’s licenses, identification cards, non-commercial instruction permits, and Driver Authorization Cards. These documents with expiration dates from March 12, 2020, onward are extended from September 14 through November 12, 2020. The existing extension was set to expire on September 13. A one-year extension remains in effect for drivers aged 65 and older.

DMV Director Julie Butler stated that online renewals for most driver’s licenses and all ID cards will be available in October. “The new extension will allow Nevadans to keep driving legally and avoid crowds at DMV offices once online renewals go live,” Butler said. Up to 75,000 Nevadans will be eligible for online license renewals through December, with about 100,000 eligible each subsequent year.

This new extension does not apply to vehicle registration or other DMV documents. The current registration extension expires on September 13. Vehicles must have a movement permit or full registration to operate on public streets. Movement permits can be obtained without an appointment at all DMV offices, while registration renewals are available online and at kiosks.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting public building capacity to 50%, many customers in Las Vegas and Reno have struggled to secure appointments. To address this issue, the DMV will offer limited Saturday hours specifically for new residents needing a Nevada driver’s license or ID by appointment only from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., starting September 19.

New residents unable to obtain a Nevada driver’s license or ID can still register to vote by submitting a paper application to their County Clerk by October 6. More information is available on the Secretary of State’s website.
