The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is set to implement a new requirement from the 2019 Nevada Legislature that mandates motorists to provide odometer readings during vehicle registration or renewal. This change, outlined in Assembly Bill 483 (AB 483), will take effect on October 1.
Under AB 483, the DMV will collect odometer readings at the time of original vehicle registration, renewal, or sale. Exemptions are made for motorcycles, mopeds, and certain other vehicles like farm vehicles. To ease the transition, the DMV plans to utilize odometer data from emissions tests conducted in Clark and Washoe counties. For all other vehicles—including cars, trucks, buses, recreational vehicles of any size or fuel type—owners must submit their odometer readings.
DMV Director Julie Butler stated, “The DMV’s online services and kiosks will accept odometer readings and we encourage you to continue to use them. Just remember to write down your odometer reading or take a picture of it before you get started.”
The collected data will be used to generate reports on total miles driven in Nevada. These reports aim to assist the legislature in making informed decisions regarding future roadway funding. The initiative is a pilot project scheduled to run until December 31, 2026.
Importantly, there are no additional fees, taxes, or fines associated with this requirement under AB 483.
