The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has introduced a new online service to assist customers who have recently purchased used vehicles. This service allows these new owners to acquire a 30-day movement permit for vehicles not yet registered in their name.

“We’re excited to be able to offer the 30-day permits to our customers,” said DMV Director Julie Butler. “This was one of the most-requested online transactions, and it will help our customers drive their newly purchased vehicles legally prior to registration.” For those purchasing from Nevada dealerships, a permit is already provided, with most vehicles eligible for online registration through the DMV’s Electronic Dealer Report of Sale system.

To obtain a permit, customers can visit dmv.nv.gov and log into or create a MyDMV account. After logging in, they should select the “Temporary Movement Permit – Non-Registered Vehicle” option under the “Registration and Insurance” section. The permit costs $1, while driving an unregistered vehicle without one can result in fines up to $1,000.

“With our customers being able to purchase a movement permit for only a dollar from our website, there’s a strong incentive for all Nevadans to make sure they’re driving their newly-acquired vehicles legally,” Butler stated. Although movement permits are available on a walk-in basis at larger DMV offices, registration services typically require appointments.

Butler emphasized saving time by utilizing online services: “We’re encouraging everyone to take a look at the services we provide online at dmv.nv.gov as an alternative to continuing to visit offices in person.” The DMV aims for more digital availability of its services as part of its ongoing transformation efforts. In 2022 alone, approximately 200,000 transactions could have been completed using existing online services.
