The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will conduct town hall meetings at four DMV locations across the state on February 26 to inform residents about Real ID requirements. These requirements will become mandatory for travelers starting October 1, 2020, as a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or other acceptable identification, such as a passport, will be necessary for boarding domestic flights. Real IDs are already needed to access secure federal facilities.

The town halls are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Carson City and Elko DMV offices, while sessions in Reno and Las Vegas’ West Flamingo office will start at 6 p.m. Residents can bring their Real ID documentation for review during these meetings. Those with complete documentation will receive a ‘Boarding Pass’ for expedited service when applying.

A dedicated website, GetRealNevada.com, has been established by the DMV to assist residents in preparing a personalized list of documents required for obtaining a Real ID.

Governor Steve Sisolak emphasized the importance of compliance: “We don’t want a single Nevadan to get turned away at the airport for non-compliant identification.” He added that a Real ID allows Nevadans to travel securely and efficiently.

DMV Director Julie Butler advised checking if one’s driver’s license or ID card has a gold star in the upper right corner, indicating it is already Real ID compliant. “If your license has the gold star, you already have a Real ID. You’re good to go,” she said. For those without it, she recommended visiting GetRealNevada.com to determine necessary documents before attending a town hall or DMV office.

Butler noted that obtaining a Real ID is optional in Nevada but urged not waiting until the last minute if one chooses to get it: “Prepare yourself by visiting GetRealNevada.com first and you’ll have a successful trip to the DMV.”

Residents are encouraged to make appointments at DMV offices in Carson City, Las Vegas, and Reno. The upgrade process can be combined with other transactions like address changes or vehicle registration updates.
