Nevada dedicates the month of May to recognizing its rich history, a tradition that has been observed since the early 1980s. This period is known as Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness Month, a time when the diverse history of the state, reflected in its landscapes and legacy, is celebrated.

The state’s history, as varied as its geography, is mapped across the Sierra Nevada peaks and the Great Basin. The story of Nevada’s past, captured in its historic buildings, structures, and archaeological sites, is shared with residents and visitors.

During this month, the public is encouraged to delve into Nevada’s history. Opportunities range from guided tours of historical landmarks to interactive displays of archaeological findings. Information on statewide events and activities can be found at https://shpo.nv.gov/get-involved/nevadas-historic-preservation-and-archaeological-awareness-month.

The month is also a time to emphasize the necessity of safeguarding this heritage. Robin K. Reed, Acting Administrator and Deputy SHPO of the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, stated, “This month is a time to reflect on the importance of preserving Nevada’s unique heritage. Through our collective efforts, we can ensure that future generations have the opportunity to learn from and appreciate Nevada’s rich cultural legacy.”

Residents are invited to join in celebrating the state’s natural and cultural resources throughout May, with an emphasis on preserving history and encouraging future appreciation of Nevada’s unique past.
