In celebration of Cybersecurity Awareness Month this October, the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) System Computing Services (SCS) invites all NSHE students, faculty, and staff to participate in a series of virtual webinars. This series is designed to help the NSHE community stay informed about the latest trends and threats in cybersecurity, offering both personal and professional insights.
The NSHE Cybersecurity Webinar Series will feature expert speakers covering a range of topics, from the impact of artificial intelligence to the growing role of cryptocurrency in higher education. Here’s a preview of the sessions:
On October 2, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Jefferson Grace, former Detective with the Las Vegas Cybercrime Task Force, will present “Undersold and Overexposed: Underestimating Cyber Risk at the Dawn of Gen AI.” This session will explore how generative AI has magnified the attack surface in cybersecurity and increased the potential for cyberattacks. Grace will discuss the evolution of these risks, highlighting the consequences of Risk Acceptance and Risk Avoidance and the need for a shift in culture around cyber risk.
On October 17, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Adam Morris and Tim Hilbie, Public Sector Higher Education Strategists at SHI, will lead a session titled “The AI Effect: A Discussion on its Impact and Future in Higher Education.” This session will explore AI’s role in transforming academic support, automating business processes, personalizing learning experiences, and more. Morris and Hilbie will discuss how AI may impact NSHE institutions.
On October 22, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Ruth Harpool, Payment Services Advisor at CampusGuard will present “What Higher Education Should Know about Cryptocurrency.” With the rise of cryptocurrency raising questions about accepting crypto for donations or tuition payments within higher education institutions. Harpool’s session aims to demystify cryptocurrency by offering an overview of its terminology and applications in education. She will share stories from peer institutions and provide guidance on key risks, benefits,and decision-making factors.
