The deadline for obtaining a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card has been extended once again, as announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The new compliance date is now set for May 7, 2025.

This extension provides relief to Nevada residents concerned about meeting the previous October 1 deadline. Julie Butler, Director of the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), commented on the extension, stating, “This is a great relief for our travel and tourism industries, individual Nevadans and the DMV across the board. It allows the DMV, in particular, to avoid a potential rush of customers this fall as we continue to recover from the pandemic.”

The DMV advises those needing a Real ID to wait until their next renewal or in-person office visit. Customers can upgrade to a Real ID during another transaction, such as car registration. More information can be found at dmvnv.com/realid.

By May 7, 2025, all air travelers aged 18 and older will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, passport, or another TSA-acceptable form of identification to pass through airport security. These cards are also required for entry into secure federal facilities like military bases and courthouses.
