The 19th annual Tahoe Bike Month, held throughout June, saw record-breaking participation with 474 residents and visitors logging 9,890 trips covering 78,798 miles and climbing 5,512,602 vertical feet. The event is organized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition to promote sustainable transportation in the region.

Participants engaged in over 20 bike-friendly events including bike kitchen pop-ups, bike path cleanups, and the Pride Bike Ride. TRPA senior transportation planner Kira Richardson expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement. “We commend all participants for getting out of their cars and experiencing Tahoe’s magnificent paths and trails,” Richardson said. “Your efforts not only promote healthier lifestyles but also contribute significantly to preserving our environment.”

Riders logged their activities on tahoebike.org/bike-month to compete for prizes donated by local businesses. In the team category, “Competitive Commuters” emerged victorious with 156 points. Individual achievements included “Carson ‘the’ Guy” with 152 rides; Joshua Hutchens who gained 85,981 vertical feet and covered 1,176 miles; and Mark Hoefer who completed a ride of 139 miles ascending 14,423 vertical feet. Of the total participants, 39 biked every day throughout June.

Nick Speal, president of the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and one of those who biked daily stated: “The community’s enthusiasm and commitment to biking not only set new records but also exemplifies our mission to make it safer and more fun to get around Tahoe on two wheels.”

The event was supported by sponsors including Gear Lab, Pine Nut Cycle Cafe, Heavenly Epic Promise, Blue Granite Climbing Gym among others.

Organizers hope this year’s momentum will encourage continued use of biking as well as walking and transit options throughout summer. For more information on sustainable transportation in Tahoe visit LinkingTahoe.com or explore map.tahoebike.org.
