Seattle’s Lynnwood Link Extension L300 project has been recognized as the most outstanding construction project of 2024 by the Associated General Contractors of America. Skanska, the contractor for the project, received the Baldwin Group Build America Award’s top prize. They were also awarded for the best construction management in a civil project.
“Projects like this require an unparalleled level of skill, dedication and competence to pull off,” said Tom Brown, the association’s national president and president of San Diego-based Sierra Pacific West. “This award acknowledges, recognizes and honors the unique accomplishments of the men and women who made this project a success.”
The Lynwood Link L300 project expanded Sound Transit’s light rail by 3.7 miles to the Lynnwood Transit Center, involving both elevated and at-grade guideway construction, and two new stations. Skanska managed 14 full freeway closures while constructing, using innovative techniques to overcome challenges like semiconductor shortages affecting escalator installations.
Several other Seattle-area projects were also honored. Sound Transit’s L200 Lynnwood Link extension by Stacy Witbeck and Kiewit, a joint venture, won for best new highway and transportation project valued over $100 million. Orion Marine Contractors’ Vigor Shipyards SW Yard NRD Habitat Project received the award for best environmental enhancement. SeaTac’s Baggage Optimization project by Hensel Phelps Construction was recognized for the best renovation project valued over $100 million. Lastly, Garco Construction’s work on the Cle Elum Dam Fish Passage Juvenile Facility won for best new federal and heavy project.
The L200 Lynnwood Link Extension project by Stacy Witbeck and Kiewit extended the transit route further into Snohomish County with the construction of guideway bridge structures and extensive wall systems. Orion Marine’s efforts at the Vigor Shipyard restored significant natural habitats, clearing pollutants and building new intertidal zones. At SeaTac Airport, Hensel Phelps overhauled the baggage handling system, ensuring minimal disruption while expanding key facilities. Garco’s construction on the Cle Elum Dam incorporated advanced techniques to maintain ecological balances and manage water levels.

The Baldwin Group Build America Awards are considered a significant recognition in the U.S. construction industry, with a judging panel reviewing various aspects such as project complexity and innovation. Awards were announced at the association’s annual convention in Columbus, Ohio.
