Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo commanded that flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on May 15, in honor of peace officers who have lost their lives while serving. The flags were lowered at the Capitol and all state public buildings and grounds.
In a press release issued by Governor Lombardo, it was stated that National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day was observed across the country on May 15.
"On National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those peace officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and we recognize the grief and loss suffered by their families and friends," said Lombardo in the press release. "May their memory serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the enduring strength and bravery of our law enforcement community."
The Officer Down Memorial Page website reports that 140 Nevada police officers have been killed in the line of duty. The leading causes of death include gunfire (64), vehicle crashes (24), and COVID-19 (10).
According to Lombardo's press release, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in 1962.
