The Elko Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin accepting appointments starting July 22, 2024, in an effort to better serve its customers.

"We think appointments are a better option for our customers as opposed to walking in and being asked to come back later," said Director Tonya Laney. "Ideally, we'd like to save our customers a trip so they only need to come to an office one time. We'll still allow walk-ins for people, but eventually we'd like to go strictly to appointments in Elko."

Appointments can be made through the department's new appointment system, WaitWell, which was rolled out statewide a few months ago.

As always, the DMV encourages customers to complete their transactions online at dmv.nv.gov if possible. "Skip the trip to the office altogether and choose online if you can instead," added Laney. "Online is the best way to do business with the DMV because you can do it wherever you are, in your living room, camping, or at a sporting event."

The agency is currently undergoing its DMV Transformation Effort aimed at expanding online services and fundamentally changing how it interacts with the public.

"We really need your cooperation with this effort," said Laney. "Don't just grab your paperwork and head for an office. Think ahead, don't wait until last minute to renew, and make an appointment."
