Students, faculty, and community leaders at the College of Southern Nevada are advocating for the respect and acceptance of transgender individuals. This movement comes in response to recent comments by NSHE Regent Patrick Boylan.
On March 27, CSN's Gender and Sexuality Alliance, the Q Club, and the Nevada Faculty Alliance-CSN organized two rallies at North Las Vegas and Charleston campuses. These events were held to protest Boylan's remarks and promote Transgender Visibility. Participants included students, faculty, staff, and community members supporting transgender rights.
Speakers at the rallies featured GSA chair Joe Hassert, DRC staff member Gavin Davis, CSN political science professor Alethea Martic, as well as CSN students Alex Perdue and Lucas Rodriguez. Community members Bada Ogee Taylor, Viannah Rose Taylor, and Rio Antone also shared their thoughts on the importance of acceptance.
Joe Hassert highlighted that the events aimed not only to protest but also to celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31. He stressed the importance of showing support for transgender individuals within CSN against ignorance and bigotry from influential figures.
The GSA plans to continue its advocacy efforts by organizing a rally at an upcoming NSHE Regent meeting on April 19. Those interested in joining can sign up for more information via a form available online.
