Nevada motorists will soon be required to submit odometer readings to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) starting October 1, 2019. This requirement is part of a pilot project aimed at assisting lawmakers in making informed decisions regarding highway funding.

The initiative follows the passage of Assembly Bill 483 (AB 483) during the 2019 legislative session. The bill mandates that the DMV collect odometer readings at the time of original registration, registration renewal, or vehicle sale. To reduce any inconvenience, the DMV plans to utilize odometer readings from emissions tests conducted in Clark and Washoe counties. Certain vehicles, including motorcycles, mopeds, and farm vehicles, are exempt from this requirement.

Owners must provide odometer readings for all other types of vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses, and recreational vehicles regardless of size or fuel type. This includes electric vehicles and those located in rural areas.

"We’re making the process as efficient as possible," stated DMV Director Julie Butler. "Just remember to write down your mileage before you get started. The DMV’s online services and kiosks will accept readings and we encourage everyone to continue using them."

The data collected from these odometer readings will solely be used to generate reports on total miles driven for submission to the Nevada Legislature. There are no associated fees, taxes, or fines with this program. The pilot project is scheduled to run until December 31, 2026.

Currently, the DMV is drafting regulations that will outline specific procedures for collecting these readings. A public workshop on these regulations is set for Tuesday, September 3, 2019. It will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City with videoconferencing available at both the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas and Great Basin College in Elko.
