The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has expanded its online services to include the option for motorists to select from a range of specialty license plates when registering their vehicles. This new service is available for those purchasing vehicles from Nevada dealers, who have had the option to register online since 2009 but were previously limited to standard plate designs.
Now, drivers can choose from 16 different specialty plates that support various charitable causes. These include Animal Appreciation, Las Vegas Commemorative, Organ Donation, Pyramid Lake, Raiders, Reno Air Races, and United We Stand. The DMV plans to expand this selection by adding more plates each month until all 35 unrestricted specialty plates are available online.
"This is a win all the way around. The charities should see more revenue, the motorist has more choices and the DMV benefits from increased usage of online services," stated Julie Butler, Department Director. She emphasized that during the COVID pandemic, there was a significant increase in online registration usage—a trend they aim to continue.
Prior to this change, only about 30% of eligible motorists used the online registration service. The primary reason cited by customers and auto dealers was the lack of choice in license plates. However, since the onset of the pandemic, this number has risen to approximately 50%.
In fiscal year 2019, out of 316,035 eligible vehicles, 91,787 registrations were completed online. By fiscal year 2021, this figure rose to 165,141 out of 323,353 eligible vehicles. Despite these gains in usage—now at 51%—there remain about 158,000 motorists annually who do not utilize online registration.
"If you buy a car, truck or motorcycle from a Nevada dealer," Butler advised consumers "you should register it online and avoid the trip to the DMV. It’s fast easy and now you have a choice of plates."
Since introducing some plate styles in June and July this year alone as many as August 13th had seen over two thousand specialty plate orders through online registrations.
