The state of Nevada is experiencing a significant shortage of registered nurses, a trend expected to persist in the coming years. In response, Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is expanding its Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program starting with the Spring 2025 cohort. This initiative aims to address the critical demand for skilled healthcare professionals both within Nevada and beyond.

"Expanding our nursing program reflects both the growing demand for healthcare professionals and our commitment to serving our community," stated Jody Covert, director of the Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program. "This expansion will allow more students to pursue their dreams of becoming nurses while also addressing the urgent need for trained professionals in the state."

By increasing enrollment, TMCC aims to mitigate the nursing shortage and ensure that Northern Nevada’s healthcare system is equipped with skilled professionals necessary for high-quality patient care.

The Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program is recognized for producing proficient nurses who serve in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities throughout the region. The program maintains high educational standards through hands-on clinical experience and rigorous curriculum supported by dedicated faculty members.

"Our program is ready to handle additional students now," added Covert. "We've added three new full-time faculty members this year, opened a new skills lab in Fall 2023, and increased support staff to help students navigate the program’s requirements."

Aspiring nursing students have until Friday, Dec. 20 at noon to apply for the Spring 2025 semester.

In another development, TMCC announced that its RN to BSN Program has received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). This milestone was achieved during ACEN's September 2024 meeting and highlights TMCC's commitment to maintaining high standards in nursing education.

"We are incredibly proud to have earned accreditation for the RN to BSN program," said Covert. "It reflects our unwavering commitment to providing top-tier nursing education and preparing our students for leadership roles in the healthcare field."

This accreditation not only benefits current and future students but also validates past graduates' experiences like Jose Rivera, a 2023 graduate who shared how completing the RN to BSN program enhanced his practice significantly.

TMCC's RN to BSN program offers an online format over a span of 12 months designed specifically for working registered nurses aiming to further their education while developing leadership skills.
