The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection held a meeting on September 23, 2024, to discuss candidates for the vacancy in Department 1 of the 1st Judicial District Court. The vacancy arises due to Judge James T. Russell's retirement on October 31, 2024. After conducting background checks, the Commission forwarded three applicants' names to Governor Lombardo today.
Applicants needed to be Nevada attorneys at least 25 years old with ten years of legal experience and two years of practice and residency in Nevada. Governor Lombardo now has until November 29, 2024, to choose an appointee from the nominees provided by the Commission. The current term for district court judges ends on January 4, 2027.
The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection consists of seven permanent members and two temporary members per selection process. Permanent members include the Supreme Court Chief Justice, three non-attorneys appointed by the Governor, and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. Temporary members are appointed by both the Governor and State Bar for each selection process.
