The Nevada Division of Insurance (NVDOI) has introduced a new online tool to assist Nevada residents in finding home insurance providers that are currently accepting applications based on specific zip codes. This initiative comes as obtaining personal home insurance has become increasingly challenging compared to previous years.
According to the NVDOI, "Insurance companies are facing increased losses due [to] the frequency and severity of catastrophic weather events across the United States, including hurricanes, floods, tornados, and hailstorms." Additionally, wildfires have significantly affected western U.S. states, complicating the availability and affordability of home insurance in certain areas of Nevada.
To address these challenges, the NVDOI conducted an industry data call involving all carriers currently offering personal home insurance. As a result, they developed a detailed database available through their website at doi.nv.gov. The Homeowner Coverage Tool can be accessed under the Consumer link followed by the Homeowners Insurance tab. By entering their zip code into this tool, homeowners can obtain a list of applicable insurance carriers for their area.
The database provides essential information such as the insurance company's name, phone number, and website address. However, it is important to note that "this is data as of December 31, 2023," and it may change over time. Applicants must undergo each carrier's unique underwriting review process with no guarantee that coverage will be offered.
