The Western Nevada College Geology Club is set to host its annual Rock, Mineral and Fossil Sale on December 6. The event will take place in Room 322 of the Bristlecone Building at the Carson City campus from 2 to 6 p.m.
WNC Professor of Geosciences, Dr. Winnie Kortemeier, emphasized the importance of this sale for raising funds to establish an endowed scholarship for students with a keen interest in geosciences. “We have rock, mineral, fossil, gem and shell specimens from all over the western U.S.,” she said. Dr. Kortemeier estimates that over 1,000 samples will be available for purchase.
Dr. Kortemeier advises potential buyers to arrive early for a better selection of items. This year’s sale introduces new samples such as garnet in rhyolite sourced from Garnet Hill near Ely, Nevada.
Additionally, attendees can expect magnetite samples from C Hill in Carson City and attractive copper ore samples from the Yerington area. “Rocks and minerals make great Christmas gifts for kids and adults alike," noted Dr. Kortemeier. "And these beautiful samples need homes for the holidays.”
