After Thanksgiving, the focus often shifts to shopping events like Cyber Monday. However, the TMCC Foundation and Grants Office is drawing attention to Giving Tuesday on December 3rd. This global day of giving highlights important causes.
TMCC is concentrating efforts on two essential programs: the Student Emergency Resource Fund and Wizard’s Warehouse food pantries. These initiatives aim to assist students experiencing unexpected financial challenges and food insecurity, helping them continue their education successfully.
“The TMCC Foundation is excited to share an exciting opportunity for Giving Tuesday 2024,” stated Foundation Executive Director Gretchen Sawyer. “Thanks to a generous $10,000 matching gift from Dr. Barry Frank, we have the chance to double our impact on students in need! If we collectively raise $10,000, Dr. Frank will match every dollar raised, providing a significant boost to our most vulnerable students as they work toward their education and career goals.”
During the 2023-24 academic year, there were 57 requests for emergency funds at TMCC, assisting 48 students facing severe financial difficulties. Additionally, 2,762 students depended on the food pantry during this period. Donations made this Giving Tuesday will directly support these critical resources.
An example of how emergency funds can help involves a student named Bill who faced serious car troubles that threatened his ability to attend classes and work. With assistance from the Emergency Resource Fund, he managed necessary repairs and continued his semester without interruption.
Dr. Barry Frank's generous matching gift supports this year's Giving Tuesday efforts. He advocates for "helper’s high," which refers to positive emotions resulting from selfless acts of service—a state linked with improved health and longevity according to Science Direct (2018).
Every donation contributes significantly as it will be matched by Dr. Frank’s pledge. The concept encourages individuals to experience joy through giving while positively impacting TMCC students' lives.
