Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) faculty members Candace Garlock and Miles Hall have been recognized at the Reno Tahoe International Art Awards. Garlock received an award for Artistic Excellence in Mixed Media: 2D, while Hall was honored in the Oil & Acrylic category. TMCC also earned a Best of Show trophy in Galleries & Features.
Garlock's work, titled 'Daily Nodes,' was part of the showcase. She explained her artistic process: “I appreciate the interconnectedness of everything, exploring relationships: humanity with environments, animals, and humans." Her submission featured two distinct bodies of work with overlapping textures and lines.
Hall shared insights into his creative approach: “I want my work to return you, as the viewer, to the look and feel of the real world and the sensuality of paint in all its various inflections.” He is currently working on documenting his neighborhood in Reno through painting.
The TMCC Marketing and Communications Office (MCO) also celebrated success by winning five National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) awards from District 6. The office secured three bronze medals and two gold medals across different categories including Government or Community Relations Campaigns and Logo Wear.
“These awards are a reflection of a well-balanced team with recognized expertise,” said Kylie Rowe, Executive Director of Institutional Research, Marketing, and Web Services at TMCC. Rowe expressed pride in leading a team focused on collaboration across campus.
Additionally, TMCC President Dr. Karin Hilgersom has joined America Is All In Leaders Circle. This organization collaborates with public and private sectors to develop national climate strategies. During New York’s Climate Week, Hilgersom shared TMCC's initiatives aimed at preparing students for careers in clean energy.
America Is All In seeks to cut U.S. emissions by half by 2030 as part of meeting Paris Agreement obligations. The organization aims to unify institutions toward sustainable actions against climate change.
