The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents has conferred the title of President Emeritus on Joyce Helens, acknowledging her significant contributions to Great Basin College (GBC) and higher education in Nevada. Helens served as GBC's president from 2017 to 2024, a period marked by growth and collaboration.
During her tenure, Helens initiated several projects that enhanced GBC's reputation and influence in rural Nevada. Among these was the establishment of the Mining Center of Excellence, aimed at supporting workforce development in Nevada’s mining industry. She also secured funding for an addition to the Winnemucca campus through a partnership with the William N. Pennington Foundation and the University of Nevada, Reno, which earned NSHE the Cashman Good Government Award.
Helens oversaw renovations and expansions of the Welding Technology Lab, creating new opportunities for students and boosting the local economy. Her efforts to promote collaboration within NSHE included shared services initiatives with UNR and Truckee Meadows Community College to improve operational efficiency. Her dedication to student success was recognized in 2024 when she received the Phi Theta Kappa International Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction.
Governor Joe Lombardo praised Helens in a letter of recommendation: “President Helens dedicated her career to serving the citizens of rural Nevada, tirelessly working to build healthy, vibrant communities and empowering individuals to achieve the American Dream."
Board of Regents Chair Amy J. Carvalho commented on Helens' impact: “President Helens was instrumental in shaping Great Basin College into a stronger institution for the students and communities of rural Nevada.” Chancellor Patricia Charlton added: “Her efforts to enhance collaboration and expand opportunities have strengthened both the college and the communities it serves.”
