The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents recently dedicated time during their quarterly meeting to honor the memory of Dr. Lois Tarkanian, a committed Regent known for her advocacy in education and public service.
"Reflecting on Dr. Tarkanian’s life and legacy reminded all of us of the extraordinary impact she had on Nevada," stated Board Chair Amy J. Carvalho. "Her dedication to education, her kindness, and her leadership have left a lasting mark on our state. She inspired so many through her actions, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to honor her memory together."
Dr. Tarkanian began her career as a classroom teacher before progressing to roles such as speech pathologist, principal, and university instructor. She was instrumental in creating programs for students with disabilities, focusing on inclusion to aid their success. Her commitment to education remained evident throughout her life.
Dr. Tarkanian's association with Nevada started in 1973 when she moved to Las Vegas with her family. Her late husband, Jerry Tarkanian, served as head basketball coach at UNLV, contributing significantly to the family's legacy in the state; however, Dr. Tarkanian's influence reached beyond athletics.
"Taking a moment to reflect on Dr. Tarkanian’s contributions was both emotional and uplifting," expressed Vice Chair Jeffrey Downs. "It reminded us of her incredible ability to bring people together for a greater purpose. Her legacy will continue to guide and inspire us as we work to build on the foundations she helped create."
In 2020, Dr. Tarkanian joined the NSHE Board of Regents, bringing extensive experience and passion for higher education. Her leadership benefited Nevada’s higher education institutions and the community at large. Her dedication extended further into public service roles with the Clark County School Board and over ten years as a Las Vegas City Councilwoman representing Ward 1.
"Dr. Lois Tarkanian embodied the values we strive for in higher education—compassion, commitment, and a belief in the potential of every student," said Chancellor Patricia Charlton. "While she is greatly missed, her legacy will live on in the students and communities she devoted her life to serving."
The NSHE conveys its deepest condolences to Dr. Tarkanian’s family, friends, and everyone who knew her.
