Nevada approves new strategic plan for its higher education system

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents has approved the "Success by Design" strategic plan, which will guide the future of higher education across Nevada's eight institutions until 2031. The initiative aims to address workforce needs, support student success, and improve access to higher education for underrepresented groups.

Board Chair Amy J. Carvalho stated, "The 'Success by Design' plan reflects NSHE’s commitment to strengthening higher education in Nevada, ensuring our institutions are equipped to meet both current and future needs." She emphasized that the plan focuses on tangible and measurable progress toward goals such as expanding opportunities for all students and positioning Nevada's higher education system for long-term success.

According to workforce projections from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce analyzed through 2031, Nevada is expected to have over 1.5 million job openings, with 61% requiring higher education credentials. Jobs needing higher education are anticipated to grow 81% faster than those requiring only a high school diploma. NSHE’s institutions play a crucial role in meeting this demand, with the "Success by Design" plan focusing on five priority areas to support workforce readiness.

Key components of the plan include increasing access to higher education by simplifying admissions processes and expanding dual credit options; improving student success through consistent support; closing institutional performance gaps; aligning programs with high-demand jobs in Nevada; and promoting research that benefits local communities.

Chancellor Patricia Charlton commented, "The 'Success by Design' plan centers around supporting Nevada’s students and communities in meaningful ways. It’s about expanding access, removing barriers, and creating opportunities for all Nevadans to succeed."
