Ray Embry, a founding figure at Truckee Community College (TMCC), played a pivotal role in the institution's development since its inception in 1971. Known as one of the "Steadies," Embry contributed to laying the groundwork that has allowed TMCC to thrive over the years. Although he passed away last year, his dedication to education continues through an endowment established with the TMCC Foundation.

Embry and his colleagues were instrumental in creating the Steadies Endowed Scholarship, aimed at supporting students with financial needs. Following his passing, his wife Sydney made an additional donation to further this cause. Since its inception, the scholarship has assisted 12 students.

Throughout his life, Ray Embry had diverse experiences including serving in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia and playing golf. His academic journey led him from earning degrees at the University of Nevada and a PhD from the University of Oregon to teaching positions at the University of Texas and the University of Hawaii. Eventually, he returned to Nevada where he taught English at TMCC for over 25 years.

Even after retiring, Embry's passion for teaching persisted as he began instructing classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) in Ashland, Oregon. He taught more than 50 OLLI classes on topics ranging from Classic Greek literature to modern-day authors, consistently receiving enthusiastic applause from students.

Ray is survived by Sydney, his partner of 45 years. His impact endures through both his former students and the scholarship fund he helped create.
