Chief Justice Elissa F. Cadish | Nevada Supreme Court

Chief Justice Douglas Herndon announced that the Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection has received five applications for the vacancy in Department 2 of the Seventh Judicial District Court. This position became available following the retirement of Judge Gary Fairman in early April.

The Commission is tasked with nominating three candidates to fill this vacancy. Interviews are set for March 11, 2025, in Ely and will be accessible to the public via a live stream on the Supreme Court’s YouTube channel. After these interviews, Governor Joe Lombardo will receive nominations for three finalists.

Eligible applicants must have at least ten years of legal experience, including two years practicing law in Nevada. The Commission consists of seven permanent members: the Supreme Court Chief Justice, three non-attorneys appointed by the Governor, and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. Restrictions prevent more than two permanent members from belonging to the same political party or county.

For district court vacancies like this one, two additional temporary members join – one non-attorney appointed by the Governor and one attorney by the State Bar from within the judicial district where there is a vacancy – making up a total of nine members on this occasion.
