Western Nevada College's Construction students recently volunteered their time and skills to assist senior citizens at Solista Carson, an independent living community. Led by Professor Nigel Harrison, 14 students participated in various repair and assembly projects, providing much-needed assistance to the residents.

"This volunteer experience offered our students valuable lessons in community service," stated WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe. "Most importantly, it demonstrated how they can use their skills to support others while experiencing the fulfillment of making a difference."

The initiative was proposed by Solista Carson’s Community Relations Director Kimberly Hallock after she and Harrison met during the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Leadership 2024 Class. Hallock noted, "Nigel readily made it happen," adding that the residents were grateful for both the company and assistance provided by the students.

Barbara Brumfield, a resident of six years, expressed her appreciation for the help she received from students Oscar Vasquez and Joshua Silva who assembled a freestanding kitchen cabinet for her. "Every bit helps … having the students come here and do what most people take for granted," she said.

Sandi Cazarez, another student volunteer, suggested that such projects should occur every semester as they provide seniors with more time to spend with their families. She assisted Barbara Yates by assembling two freestanding shelves.

The student volunteers undertook tasks such as installing lighting and safety bars, mounting TVs on walls, hanging pictures, removing dead plants, performing minor plumbing repairs, and moving furniture.

Professor Harrison praised his students' efforts: "I expected the students to show up and help out, but the personal touches that went into their work and conversations they had with the tenants were above and beyond."

Harold Iodence complimented Richard Tidrick and Michael Robinson on their work installing his TV mount. Another resident appreciated having company while getting necessary tasks done.
