In 2024, the Nevada Outdoor Education & Recreation (NOER) grant program launched with notable success. The initiative attracted 64 project proposals requesting a total of $1.4 million in funding to enhance outdoor learning experiences across all 17 counties in Nevada.
The program allocated approximately $250,000 to support 23 projects, categorized into nine Tier II projects receiving up to $30,000 each and 14 microgrant projects receiving up to $5,000 each. These initiatives engaged over 10,944 participants in outdoor education and recreation activities. Collectively, they provided young people with more than 25,855 hours of outdoor learning aimed at fostering environmental stewardship. Additionally, the projects supported 57 jobs within Nevada's growing outdoor economy and generated an extra $329,406 through matching contributions including cash donations, volunteer work, and in-kind services.
The NOER grant recipients represent a diverse range of educational opportunities throughout Nevada. Key funded projects include environmental education programs managed by organizations such as Walker Basin Conservancy and River Wranglers; equine therapy for youth with disabilities offered by the Center for Adaptive Riding; backpacking camps organized by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association; and urban nature exploration initiatives for minorities in Las Vegas led by Together We Can.
Smaller scale microgrant projects also made significant contributions statewide. Notable efforts include birdwatching trips at Washoe Lake facilitated by the Lahontan Audubon Society; field trips to Red Rock Canyon for Title I schools arranged by Friends of Red Rock Canyon; and STEM camp experiences for Title I students coordinated by Sierra Nevada Journeys.
Denise Beronio, Administrator of NDOR stated: “The NOER grant program is a game changer for outdoor education in Nevada. By funding innovative projects, we’re ensuring that youth from all backgrounds have opportunities to connect with nature, gain hands-on learning experiences, and build a lifelong appreciation for the environment.”
