DRI’s STEM Education Program is organizing free events aimed at enhancing literacy through science activities for Pre-K children in Nevada. These events, which include hands-on experiments, story time, and interactive games, are designed to make learning about ecology and electricity engaging for families. Each child will receive a free book to take home while supplies last.
In Northern Nevada, the focus will be on electricity. Participants will learn about lightning fundamentals, circuit functions, and the various uses of electricity in communities. In Southern Nevada, the emphasis will be on ecosystems and understanding the interdependence of living and nonliving things through observation and play.
“These events provide Nevada families with a way to engage young learners in a fun and interactive environment,” says Emily Mcdonald-Williams, Director of the STEM Education Program at DRI. “Our hope is that families start exposing kids to learning through play at a young age, which helps with early development and establishes a love of learning.”
Families can attend these events anytime but are encouraged to sign up for more information via provided links.
Additionally, DRI’s STEM Education Team offers Ecosystem Explorers and It’s Electric teaching kits as part of their Green Box program. These kits contain lesson plans created with input from DRI scientists and cater to students from Pre-K to 12th grade. There are currently 33 topics available ranging from water conservation to astrobiology. Educators across Nevada can access these resources free of charge.
The program receives funding from the Early Childhood Literacy Program through the Nevada Department of Education.
