On March 19, over a hundred nonprofit leaders from Nevada gathered at the Nevada State Legislature for Nonprofit Day, an event held every two years to emphasize collaboration between public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The gathering aimed to highlight the significant role nonprofits play in tackling local issues and driving improvements across the state.
The event took place at the Nevada State Legislature Building in Carson City, bringing together nonprofit executives, community leaders, and policymakers. They discussed critical issues, advocated for resources, and explored strategies to create stronger communities statewide.
A primary focus was advocating for policies that support advance payments for state grants. This initiative aims to eliminate delays and help nonprofits deliver services more efficiently. United Ways of Nevada and Nevada GrantLab are backing AB 442 with Assemblymember Howard Watts. This bill ensures timely reimbursements for nonprofits, enhances government accountability, strengthens partnerships between public and private sectors, and improves nonprofits' ability to serve communities effectively.
The event was supported by sponsors NV Energy and Nevada GrantLab. Ryan Bellows of NV Energy stated: “NV Energy is proud to support Nevada’s nonprofit sector as they address critical issues and strengthen communities." Divya Narala of Nevada GrantLab added: “Nevada GrantLab is committed to strengthening Nevada’s nonprofit sector by ensuring organizations have the resources, relationships, and support they need to thrive."
Speakers included Divya Narala from Nevada GrantLab; Blake Pang from United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra; Cody Phinney from the Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public and Behavioral Health; Amber Reid from the Nevada Department of Education; Samuel Rudd from United Way of Southern Nevada; A’Keia Sanders from the Governor’s Office of Federal Assistance; and Angel Williams from NV Energy.
Attendees networked with legislators, observed legislative sessions, toured the Nevada State Library, and engaged in discussions on partnering with state and federal agencies for effective public-private partnerships.
