Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is set to introduce Women's Volleyball to its athletic offerings in the fall of 2026, marking the college's third intercollegiate sports program following the addition of Men's and Women's Soccer in 2019. The development follows the recent approval of the sport's budget by the NSHE Board of Regents during their December meeting. The team will host its home games at the Joseph P. Ayarbe Gymnasium within the TMCC Sports and Fitness Center.
TMCC Athletic Director Geoffrey Hawkins commented on the occasion, saying, "The addition of the new women’s intercollegiate volleyball team is a monumental step forward in our athletics program. We believe this program will serve the strong volleyball community in the Reno-Sparks area."
The TMCC Women's Volleyball team will compete in NJCAA Region XVIII with institutions such as Utah State University Eastern, Snow College, Salt Lake Community College, and the College of Southern Idaho. The university aims for early success in regional tournaments, encouraged by the previous accomplishments of TMCC's soccer teams, which have qualified for the Region XVIII Tournament multiple times since their inception.
Hawkins further elaborated on the competitive environment, stating, "Region XVIII is in the NJCAA Division I and is one of the most competitive regions in the nation. The schools within this Region are focused on winning a national title each year. It drives athletes to strive for excellence."
TMCC has a unique athletic history, having been a satellite campus for Western Nevada Community College, which sponsored various sports until 1979. The revival of athletics at TMCC began in 2016 through a student-led initiative, leading to the establishment of the current programs.
Hawkins mentioned ongoing efforts to further enhance TMCC's sports presence, adding, "We are always exploring options to expand our athletics program. With the support of our students and local community, we can make this happen."
The college will conduct a national search for a coach, aiming to fill the position before the upcoming fall semester. Auditions are scheduled before Spring 2026, with the goal of participating in offseason matches ahead of their inaugural season.
