The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is cautioning residents about ongoing text message scams related to E-ZPass toll payments. The texts purportedly from the DMV urge recipients to settle toll fees via a direct link, which could deceive some individuals.
“We are not unfamiliar with scam messages being sent out that look like it comes directly from us,” stated DMV Director Tonya Laney. She advised individuals against engaging with any action prompts from such texts, as they pose a security risk.
The Nevada DMV emphasizes that it does not issue unsolicited text messages or emails. Additionally, Nevada lacks tolls on public roads, indicating that any demand for such payments is a scam.
Indicators of potential scams include poor spelling or grammar, aggressive language, urgency, or links that do not correspond to official websites.
“If you are having doubts or hesitations about a message coming from the DMV, chances are you are right,” Laney added. She suggests reporting suspect messages as scams.
