Cave Lake, a popular site for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts, is set to reopen for fishing and other recreational activities. The lake, originally constructed in 1939 for irrigation and livestock water, later became a popular fishing spot. In 1968, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and White Pine County acquired the land, and five years later, it became Cave Lake State Park.
The park features several facilities developed by State Parks, including 36 campsites, day-use areas, and a boat launch. Despite its success, long-standing issues with the dam required attention starting in 2014. In 2019, NDOW lowered water levels to manage risks, eventually draining the lake entirely in 2021 for dam repairs beginning in 2023.
The construction project tackled various elements such as excavating and replacing the dam's outlet, widening the buttress to prevent movement, installing drainage, and making other crucial modifications. Unforeseen issues extended the project into 2024, with completion in November. The restored dam meets "high hazard dam" safety requirements.
Now that the lake is filled, attention turns to the fishery. "To rebuild and enhance the Cave Lake fishery, 17,000 fish will be stocked throughout the spring—an important step in ensuring a thriving and sustainable resource for anglers." This significant restocking effort aims to revitalize Cave Lake and maintain its appeal to visitors.
