As the May 7 Real ID deadline draws near, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced that individuals requiring a Real ID can visit certain DMV metro offices without an appointment. This service is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4 p.m., starting April 22 and ending on May 15.
Residents of Nevada who need a Real ID can access DMV offices in Reno, Carson City, Sahara, Flamingo, Decatur, and Henderson during the designated times. The service operates on a first-come, first-served basis until office capacity is reached.
DMV Director Tonya Laney stated, "Nevada is currently sitting at 80% compliance with Real IDs, which is amazing." She added, "These walk-ins are really for those who are in need of obtaining a Real ID if they do not already have an unexpired passport or military ID they can show when flying or entering federal facilities."
It's important to note that obtaining a Real ID is not mandatory. Existing driver's licenses or driver authorization cards (DAC) will continue to allow valid driving privileges on Nevada roads.
The DMV advises individuals to visit www.getrealnevada.com to check if they need a Real ID and to learn which documents are necessary for their application. All licenses and ID cards will be mailed to the address on file and can be tracked using a MyDMV account.
Laney remarked, "There is already development on the horizon to build a better automated process. Our team is working hard to deliver an easier online experience."
While these walk-in opportunities for Real ID are available, the DMV continues to recommend that customers schedule appointments for all other services during regular business hours or utilize the DMV website for transactions available online.
