The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment amid recent political developments. This comes following efforts by a newly formed Presidential Taskforce to address the impact of federal executive orders on the institution.
The task force led to two significant changes: the position of Coordinator of Undocumented Students has evolved into the Coordinator for Student Success and Mentorship Program, and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has been renamed the Office of Diversity.
In addressing concerns from the CSN-NFA IDEA Committee about the national political climate, CSN's acting president, Dr. Bill Kibler, communicated the administration’s stance to the entire college community. “The IDEA Committee acknowledged that the recent issuance of Executive Orders presents challenges nationwide. However, they expressed a firm belief that we should remain steadfast in our development and implementation of CSN’s goals and purposes."
Foremost among the responses from CSN was a commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment on campuses. CSN ensures that all "spaces on our campuses are safe and secure for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors."
Additionally, the institution remains steadfast in its support for academic freedom. "CSN is fully committed to academic freedom. Faculty are expected to pursue knowledge without undue interference. This allows faculty the freedom to discuss relevant topics in the classroom, present diverse perspectives, and engage in critical thinking."
The college has also pledged to preserve resources related to diversity and inclusion. "CSN continues to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion as enduring values within our academic community.” Furthermore, it commits to equitable recruitment practices, emphasizing an "inclusive" approach and fair processes that adhere to state and federal law.
Lastly, the institution addressed the need to uphold legal obligations and ensure student privacy, noting its adherence to laws and commitment to privacy within classrooms, while acknowledging compliance if presented with appropriate legal documentation.
Dr. Bill Kibler expressed the institution's enduring dedication to its core mission. "CSN will remain fully committed to the mission, purpose, and goals of our institution and support, encourage, and remain focused on the success of all of our students, faculty, and staff."
