Granite Construction, based in Watsonville, California, has been recognized for its development of an AI-powered training tool named Asphalt Guru. This tool aims to capture the knowledge of retiring asphalt paving professionals. As a result of this innovation, Granite Construction was awarded the grand prize at the AGC Innovation Awards, sponsored by Autodesk.
Todd Roberts, the association’s national president and president of ERS Inc. in Jackson, Mississippi, stated: “We are seeking to support these innovations and to allow their creators to perfect and promote the innovations. If we really want to change the industry, we have to find a way to encourage the widespread adoption of significant innovations, which is precisely what these awards do.”
The creation of Asphalt Guru involved collaboration between Granite's IT department, Asphalt Center of Excellence, and Construction Technology group. The tool was developed by collecting data through interviews with experienced asphalt experts within the organization. These interviews were transcribed to capture valuable insights and experiences. Additional content was sourced from Granite’s Asphalt Basics courses and various industry publications. The comprehensive knowledge base enables Asphalt Guru to provide accurate answers.
During its annual convention in Columbus, Ohio earlier this month, the association presented Granite Construction with a $7,000 grand prize intended to help improve and promote their innovative solution. LIFTbuild received second place for its Vertical Manufacturing method that reimagines high-rise construction by assembling floors at ground level before lifting them into place. Old Fashioned LLC earned third place for its apprenticeship-based immigration approach aimed at addressing skilled labor shortages while providing a path to legal status for non-U.S. citizens.
Roberts emphasized that the AGC Innovation Awards were created to inspire members of the construction industry to develop solutions for pressing challenges. He noted that these awards highlight free thinkers within the industry who provide solutions to ongoing construction challenges.
