The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) has played a key role in funding the new fire station in West Wendover, Nevada. This project was supported through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and aims to serve over 4,000 residents.
West Wendover Fire Station #13 is a significant development for the city, with its construction spanning nearly two decades. The ribbon-cutting ceremony held earlier this month marked the opening of a facility designed to meet future demands for continuous fire service.
The total cost of the new station amounted to $13.6 million, which included a $500,000 contribution from CDBG. City Manager Chris Melville expressed his gratitude: “The new West Wendover Fire Station #13 is a magnificent accomplishment for the City of West Wendover... We thank Nevada GOED/CDBG for their continued support of our community given that without such support, these would not happen.”
Jessica Sanders, CDBG Program Administrator, emphasized the importance of this project: “The opening of the new West Wendover Fire Station is a proud moment for this community... This project reflects the very heart of what CDBG stands for.”
Since 1982, more than $100 million has been awarded to rural communities in Nevada through the CDBG program. The initiative allows local governments to undertake activities aimed at creating suitable living environments and economic opportunities. It is overseen by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by GOED's Rural Community Development Division.
GOED was established during the 2011 session of the Nevada Legislature as part of efforts to restructure economic development in Nevada. Its mission includes promoting economic growth and facilitating community development across the state.
