The Nevada Tahoe Conservation District (NTCD) has commenced the Kahle Drive Complete Streets Project, aimed at revamping the streetscape along the Kahle Drive corridor. This initiative includes enhancements such as water quality improvements, pedestrian sidewalks and crosswalks, a bike lane, landscaping, underground utility lines, and better access to recreation areas and open spaces. The half-mile road connects crucially to the Stateline-to-Stateline bike trail, Rabe Meadow trails, and Douglas County service centers.
Originally constructed on a wetland that played a significant role in preserving Lake Tahoe's clarity, the road is now in poor condition and lacks adequate stormwater infrastructure. The project aims to address these issues by raising parts of the roadway to help restore some natural wetland functions.
The environmental upgrades will align with other Environmental Improvement Program projects focused on restoring the Burke Creek Watershed and Rabe Meadow—historically significant to the native Washoe people as Lam Watah. Completion of this project is anticipated by October 2026.
Support for this venture comes from various organizations including NTCD, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Nevada Division of State Lands, USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Douglas County, and Oliver Park General Improvement District. Additional funding was secured through a Congressionally Directed Spending request.
Private sector contributions are provided by entities like the Tahoe Fund, NV Energy, and Barton Health. They are assisting with project staging on land previously occupied by Lakeside Inn & Casino.
