Thirteen women at the Florence McClure Women’s Correctional Center have completed workforce training programs in Hospitality and HVAC. This initiative was made possible through a collaboration between the College of Southern Nevada and the Nevada Department of Corrections. Ten participants received HVAC certificates, while three completed the hospitality program, each preparing for new career opportunities.
The graduation ceremony was part of a day-long conference that included an art auction featuring works by 12 students. The proceeds from this auction were donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Earlier in the day, Dr. Genevieve Minter, CSN’s Prison Education Manager, conducted a tour for guests, showcasing the facility's classrooms and workshops where inmates gain career skills.
Dr. Minter emphasized that this program provides "the first real chance many of these women have had to become who they were meant to be." The event focused on themes of reinvention and personal growth.
Las Vegas Councilwoman Nancy Brune delivered a keynote address, drawing parallels between Paulo Coelho's book "The Alchemist" and the women's journeys: “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
Jon Ponder, founder of Hope for Prisoners, encouraged attendees to view their past as lines on their hands but stressed that they are now pressing "the reset button."
Graduates like Leandra Smith and Karen Kincaid shared their experiences, expressing gratitude towards instructors Dr. Grayce James and Mr. Spencer Dunwoody for their support. The event concluded with remarks from Dr. James McCoy, CSN’s Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs: “You are not who you were—you are who you are becoming.”
