The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) has launched the Nevada Research Technology Strategy Workshop, aiming to enhance technology for research and STEM education. The event, hosted at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), was organized by NSHE System Computing Services in collaboration with Internet2. This workshop marks the start of a two-year initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the NV-DICE project.
Participants included representatives from NSHE, UNLV, the University of Nevada, Reno, and DRI. The workshop featured presentations from NSF program officers and discussions on campus-level planning for research technology. Dr. Scotty Strachan, Principal Research Engineer for NSHE-SCS and principal investigator for NV-DICE, highlighted potential funding opportunities through collaborative strategies developed during this effort.
“Our goal is for each institution to develop an implementable plan for faculty- and student-facing technology infrastructure and workforce development,” said Dr. Strachan. “Together, we can evolve a regional strategy to coordinate technology resources and seek external funding to augment our internal investments.”
The NV-DICE project aims to modernize research technology infrastructure across NSHE institutions while supporting science-driven education in STEM fields. It also seeks to strengthen collaboration between faculty, students, and IT professionals focusing on key areas like artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
Lauren Michael from Internet2 noted that “Nevada campuses are now well-positioned to engage in CI strategic planning and development,” leveraging national frameworks and federal funding opportunities.
Dr. Anne Heggli from DRI emphasized the importance of IT support in making data accessible for decision-making processes: “Being able to make the data accessible helps improve decision making...so that our frontline climate responders can make decisions to help our communities prepare appropriately.”
The next workshop will take place in 2026 in Reno where progress on this initiative will be shared.
